Curiosity and Discovery

When it comes to life and the experience of existence there are many things that come to mind.

First of all what is life? Well life is the fact that you are not dead. What is existence? In short existence is the awareness of not being dead thus being a living and breathing creature. How you define creature is another story. Biologically you are an organism and from there on everything depends on your belief system.

I find that there are two things in life that keep me motivated. These things are curiosity and discovery.

Curiosity is basically the need and urge to learn something new. Some people associate it with psychology and some people see it more as an attitude. Whatever you make of it, curious people love to learn and experience new things.

Discovery is even more subjective. The verb “to discover” literally means “to uncover something”, as the prefix dis- negates the verb to cover. The experience of discovering something new though is not easy to express in words. In science and literature there is the “Eureka-moment” because apparently Archimedes exclaimed it. I personally prefer “fuck yeah!” or the drier formulation “Good, this is interesting”.

As one’s curiosity leads to a discovery the answer is not always pleasant. As an avid and compulsive reader I often research what I find important to know until I find an answer I am satisfied with. Sometimes that means the answer is disappointing, saddening or depressing. Even so having some understanding of why something is the way it is, is better than having none and that is one answer worth discovering.

Life as a business student consists of reading about business studies. In reality you just learn how to make business, a set of commercial activities successful. There is only so much depth to business studies though. Between studies and sleep there is a life and by reading, listening to music and doing random things life becomes more rewarding. New and different experiences make people curious and lead to discoveries.

If anything, there is more to life than just doing what is expected by one’s environment. Being curious and going out there to discover the new and  different make life more adventurous. The adventure can lie in finding a new interpretation for a Latin word or packing up and travelling around the world. There is so much to discover…
