This short read is intended as a reply to a comment. Usually I keep my answers short. For these common questions I will make an exception.
“Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers?”
First of all read, write, draft and edit.
To read here refers to simply reading anything of personal interest that inspires you. My big inspiration was Montaigne in particular. It helps to take your time for his work and when you do so you will find great essays.
To write, draft and edit refers to your own work. Just write something, refine it, improve it and experiment with editing styles. Editing is not just checking grammar and spelling, Editing is a creative process that also includes design and presentation.
When you have nothing, there is nothing to work with and nothing to share. Therefore, first of all read and write.
“I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m totally confused ..”
You start well by asking questions. The next step involves research and comparison of options and the differences between the options.
WordPress is good. There is a learning curve and and the paid option is worth it when you are devoted and serious.
About other blog websites I know too little. Just make a list of what you find important and compare per website. When you find what you like, go for it and make it work for you.
“Any recommendations?”
Yes, they are simple though. Everything depends on your attitude and whether you want to learn.
1. Read, you need inspiration and thoughts and imagination do not come from having zero ideas.
2. Write, even when you start out with crap just write. Keep on writing and develop your own style, vocabulary and skills.
3. Share, fuck your feelings. Do not be afraid to share your ideas and work. Honest criticism helps you to develop your work and yourself.
4. Do what you enjoy doing. On this blog I fulfilled one of my long time wishes. I devoted an essay to the word “fuck” and I consider it one of my best writings.
